the windy city
i was born near Chicago
in Elgin
my father was working there
i do not remember Illinois from my childhood,
or at least very little,
we weren't there long
all of my family are Mississippi
born and raised
my dad and mom got me back to "God's Country" as fast as they could!
i am the only "yankee" born in our tribe..
i like Chicago
the wind off Lake Michigan
the midwestern sense of humor
blue collar
kind of like the blue collar folks from home
good people working hard
isn't it amazing to think about the truth..
the truth that we are all loved with abandon,
no matter the size, age, race, gender, rich, poor,
educated, uneducated, yankee, rebel, etc..
we are all pursued by the Hound of Heaven..
hallelujah!

pliable

sometimes we want to hide
to find a place no one can reach us
no cell phone
no other folks around
a place to simply be
the farm we had
i walked the field too many times to count
sometimes the horses would follow me
four dogs around me
deer watching from the deep dense woods
so dense in places it was dark at noon
i prayed a lot of decades of the Rosary walking that field
prayed for family, friends, enemies,myself..
i prayed for my animals, for guidance, for clarity,
but the page has turned
in the book of life
i must look harder for the quiet place
find it in the midst of traffic, cell phones, and the city
in the midst of demands, travel, and loneliness
we humans are pliable
grace needs only a response,
whether we are walking in a field,
or through an airport..
He is faithful.

breathe

We have to stop

breathe
we have to close our eyes
pray
we have to talk to God
listen
we have to give Him our hurry
surrender
even in the midst of the battle

Chief Pontiac

the Detroit river connects Lake Huron to Lake Erie
it is 32 miles long
straight as an arrow...
it is 41 degrees here this morning
there is a mist of sleet mixed with rain coming off the river
the wind blows here
it gusts
i am intrigued by these places
Many of the names come from Native American personalities
i.e. Chief Pontiac...
i wonder why the founders of these cities did this,
named everything pretty much after the Native peoples,
was it from honor, guilt, or something else?
"Detroit" means straight..
named by Frenchman  Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac,
this country we live in is fascinating
and it is more than what is happening to it today..
one thing i notice in all of these places i go,
the beautiful Cathedrals..
and everyone of them have a candle burning..
and this candle is in a red glass,
giving off a warm scarlet glow of assurance,
"I am with you always, even to the end...."

Every situation can lead to knowing, praising, loving, and leaning on God a little bit more---in song!.

I will be on TBN with Fr. Michael Manning. We filmed this show when i was out in California. It is one of my favorite interviews i have been a part of. Fr. Manning, who has been on Larry King numerous times, truly listened and asked wonderful questions. I hope you enjoy it.

Sweetwater Tavern

well,
i'm in Detroit tonight
never been here before,
and if you ever come here,
find the Sweetwater Tavern!
just had the best shrimp, ribs, and wings,
and the folks who run the place are great..
i am here with my boss on business..
we were just walking back from eating and he said,
"you know, you find people everywhere,
no matter where you go,
who are so kind and friendly"
Imago Dei..
the image of God,
we have the chance so often to see it,
be it,
and find it those we meet..
it's a beautiful thing..

go deeper young man..

storms
summer is coming
when i walked out this morning
back in Nashvegas,
there was the incredible smell of the coming rains
the skies were darkening
wind whipping the tree branches
by the time I left the gym two hours later,
it was like night..
southern storms speak of the heat to come,
the cooler air of spring,
being attacked by the humid heat growing,
ordinary time
living the days we are given,
sunshine or rain,
we are loved..
we are called,
"go deeper child!"
"don't settle for where you are!"
no matter where you are
no matter who you are..
keep digging..

New York

here i am
in the Big Apple
an amazing place
alive
motion,
endless vibrating life,
movement
the aroma of freshly baked bread,
and aromas i am not sure how to explain..
i arrived yesterday,
leaving tomorrow,
President Obama is here speaking to Wall Street,
Uma Thurman is here shooting a commercial on Wall Street..,
odd,
a kind of carnival town..
i keep expecting to see Tom Waits standing on a corner playing an accordion..
i will find the Cathedral this morning.
and sit before the Tabernacle
in the quiet
reminding myself
His love is bigger than all of this..
much bigger.

A light

there is a light within
and no matter the darkness
it will not go out
it may be covered at times,
lost in a fog of malaise,
hidden by the curtain of doubt,
buried by sin and pride
but it does not stop shining
we are made in the image of God,
Imago Dei
The Son of Man restores this dignity,
His cross awakens the sleeper,
and whenever we are lulled once again into complacency,
however it happens,
He will get our attention..
He loves us too much not to...

A Kind Word ( Song)

Hope you like it..

Peace,
Keith

The image

We gotta walk as best we can
while we're livin' in this wild world
We gotta talk as best we can
It's better if we use a kind word

If you have someone by your side,
be thankful
Cause there are folks who don't,
and Lord it's painful

We gotta walk as best we can
while we're livin' in this wild world
We gotta talk as best we can
It's better if we use a kind word

I've had money, I've had things,
and it's alright
And I've been broke without a single dime,
in my life, and it's alright too

We gotta walk as best we can
while we're livin' in this wild world
We gotta talk as best we can
It's better if we use a kind word

A kind word can get you far,
I'm telling you the truth
If you got an enemy in this town,
be kind it'll come back good for you

We're all pilgrims in this journey home
you know it's true
so if you can give someone else a hand
it's a good thing to do

We got to walk as best we can
while we're livin' in this wild world
We got to talk as best we can
It's better if we use a kind word

peace

if Jesus wanted everyone to be rich,
why wasn't He rich?
flipping the channels this morning,
tv preacher screaming at the camera,
"favor favor favor!!!"
he looked as if he had practiced this routine,
over and over again in front of the mirror,
"send me your seed money!"
when will this end?
this b.s. in the name of Jesus our Lord!
the "favor" we have is His Holy Spirit,
His Real Presence in the Eucharist,
His being our Great High Priest,
Always interceding for us to the Father,
We have His very own mother as our own,
We have hope in the midst of a fallen world,
we have forgiveness of sins,
we have joy inexpressible,
peace that passes understanding..
whether we have the riches of this world or not
..

Golden Days

Renee and I went into a store yesterday,
in Hillsboro Village
I think it was called "Pangea"..
they had the coolest old looking relief statues,
paintings from Mexico celebrating the "Day of the Dead",
Sacred Heart Matches..strange but cool,
the owners dog, Bailey, walked over to me
she was a chocolate Lab mix..
she nudged me and i knelt down to pet her
she rolled over and put all four feet in the air,
everyone in the store laughed as I rubbed her belly..
a day should not go by without petting a dog, or any animal,
i am so thankful for animals,
i miss Jack big time..
Wes has taken over being Jack's Alpha mail figure..
That little dog has got it good.

Ben

through the green spring leaves
i see the blue sky
a Red Tailed Hawk perched on the top
odd to see one here
Hawks are very shy birds,
they like lonely places to hunt
maybe this guy is an extrovert
i saw Ben yesterday,
a great friend who i rarely see,
he rounded a corner blowing his horn and pointing at me,
i could see a huge grin on his kind face,
i pointed back..
grace falls on all of us every single day
good or bad
happy or sad
confused or clear
in courage or fear
through a Hawk in a tree,
a friend's horn and a grin,
everything is grace..

Longing

the wonderful thing about being away from those you love,
if there is a "wonderful" thing,
is seeing them again..
the longing to hold that someone,
talk to them,
look into their eyes,
there is nothing like it on earth.
I will have that joy today,
and I am counting the minutes!
this is the longing Jesus has for us,
the longing He wants us to have for Him,
in the Eucharist we taste this especially.
it has been this way for 2000 years..
and He is always faithful to His Word,
"This is My Body"
He never fails us,
His love for us in intense, crazy, beautiful,
mysterious, endless,
'Lord, give us all this longing for You..'

Crows

i am dry today
the light is dim
the only birds are crows
they caw at me as i walk
i wonder sometimes,
do our prayers fly to God,
like birds?
some prayers are crows,
cawing at God..
some are Cardinals,
agressive yet beautful...
some are Mocking Birds,
imitating, trying to sound like everyone else..
some are Doves,
singing to our Beloved with humility and trust,
keep praying..

a beautiful day

The image

I made it to the convent yesterday,

thanks to a friend in Oxford who gave me directions.
i got lost on Saturday and finally gave up..
i don't have GPS technology in my 97 Toyota pick-up
i don't even have electric windows and doors
and no one i asked around here knew how to get there..
i called them but the phone rang and rang,
but yesterday was a wonderful time.
Parents from all over the country were there visiting.
A man asked me if i had a daughter there..
Every parent I met seemed so proud of their daughters decision,
the decision to follow Jesus this way..
i honestly can't overstate the glow in these girls..
their smiles reveal a deep substantial joy..
they have over 250 sisters there,
and it is the fastest growing convent in the country.
i spent some time in the glorious chapel before i left.
it was a beautiful day..

squirrel

a squirrel got really close this morning

he, or she, seemed incredible casual with my presence
i walked by and our eyes met
the squirrel was perched on a limb level with my head
the limb reached out across the path
i stopped as he peered into my eyes
he was motionless
a car went by and slowed a bit
they were probably wondering why i was staring at a squirrel
or,
why he was staring at me..
for a moment I felt as if he might jump to me
i didn't want this, so,
i asked him what was up,
he didn't say anything,
he turned and went further up the tree..
crazy deal..
can you tell i miss my wife, alot!?

hidden

we are hidden with Christ in God

that is a pretty cool image to ponder
not something we probably embrace enough,
I know i don't
i get too caught up in my stuff,
which is pretty boring and ugly compared to His stuff,
stuff like dying to self,
helping a friend or enemy,
pushing yourself to create more beautifully,
whatever the creation..
a couple of nights ago I went to Walgreens,
it was after 11:00 PM..
as I was looking for whatever it was I needed at midnight,
i saw a Nun standing before me.
She had on a beautiful white habit,
a rosary hanging from her waist..
i walked up and said,
"I love you guys."
she grinned and said thank you.
She insisted I come visit their convent,
St. Cecilia's..
i am on my way there now..

the Chrism Oils..

"The Oil of Gladness"
this is one name given to the Holy Spirit,
the early Church began the tradition of the Chrism Oil
making the sign of the cross on the forehead with the Oil,
on those being confirmed in the Church..
I will never forget the day i and my entire household experienced this..
i never wanted to wash my forehead,
the Oil blessed for anointing,
The Oil of Gladness
we are sealed in gladness
somewhere, deep within us,
there is great gladness,
even in the midst of suffering,
worry
fear
impatience
anxiety
doubt
there is gladness..

excess paints

a hard rain last night,

washed the heavy pollens onto the sidewalks
as i walked it looked as if van Gogh had emptied his excess paints
vivid yellow,
vibrant pinks,
soft whites,
such beauty on the grimy wet pavement..
i guess we can pave the world,
but God will still wield His paintbrush with abandon..

Fire

http://www.cringel.com/files/images/adia-2007-09-01-DSC-5227-bush-fire-in-outback-western-australia-cringel.com.jpg

so the fire burns
the embers glow
eternal flame
unquenchable
His fire of love
burns away our fear
our anxiety
our nagging worry
our tendency to sin
but we must step into the flame
we must draw near to the heat
through confession
eating His Body
drinking His Blood
He said this is the way we abide
faith allows us to do so
for without faith it is impossible to please Him,
our consuming Lord of fire,
He came to bring fire to the earth
Come Holy Spirit!

Sickening

the media can be very evil
they word things so as to manipulate
they do it well
they bend the truth just enough to poison thought
their agenda is so evident it is ridiculous
If they really wanted to speak truth,
they would talk about Ratzinger the Rottweiler again,
like they did when he was elected Pope
they would speak to how tough he was on child abusers,
they would read the history of his time as Arch Bishop of Germany,
and they would see how intense was his desire to rid the church of this menace,
they would read his words entire he wrote to Ireland two weeks ago,
how he reached out to the victims in America when he was here,
with tears in his eyes,
they would praise this man as a defender of the innocent instead of lying to destroy him
but what bothers me most,
are the Christians who usually distrust the media regarding anything like this,
and who are now wagging their heads at the Church,
believing Brian Williams, Catie Couric, and Diane Sawyer...
it's sickening.

A Beautiful Thing

spring has sprung!
at least here in the south,
the Pear Orchards and Cherry Blossoms
paint the roadside white and pink
bees are buzzing
birds are singing
in fact,
there is a bird outside my window here in Nashville,
he sings so loudly i don't need an alarm clock!
5:30 every morning he begins his song
i have gotten to where I talk to him
"Ok! I'm up!"
the beauty of our Father's world is amazing,
everything reminds us that He is risen,
it's a beautiful thing..

No one doubted..

http://christianeducational.org/ushop/images/PWmorningshorea.jpg

He is risen!

He is risen indeed.
St. Paul makes clear without this day,
without this occurrence,
our faith is pitiful
if Jesus did not rise,
"we are to be most pitied by men"
So ask Mary Magdeline,
"Did you see Him?"
Ask St. Peter,
"Did you see Him?"
Ask the 500,
"Did you see Him?"
Ask Thomas, ask the 12,
They had gone back to fishing,
they saw a small fire on the shore,
the mysterious man rose and walked toward the water,
"Cast your nets on the other side"
the nets began to fill
Peter knew immediately who this man was,
can you imagine what he must have been feeling as he swam to shore?
Jesus had grilled some fish for the boys,
they ate and no one doubted.
He is risen indeed!

today is silent

He has gone to free from sorrow Adam in his bonds and Eve, captive with him -- He who is both their God and the son of Eve.. "I am your God, who for your sake have become your son... ...I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be a prisoner in sheol. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead." [Ancient Homily for Holy Saturday

today is silent
when Jesus entered into the place
where the faithful captives were held
St. Paul says,
"He led captivity captive."
much happened on this day
great joy flooded souls who had been waiting
perfect light drove away darkness
bonds were broken
death lost its dominance...
and in Jerusalem,
in the silence of the disciples,

in the anxiety of losing their Lord,
God was doing another work
teaching them to wait for Him...

and God is still doing this in our lives
when we carry crosses
and feel all is lost
He is at work in our own dark hidden places,
setting us free

the day is here

mystics spend a great deal of time in shadows

living in and out of light
they can seem aloof at times, even rude
they even feel this way about themselves
my priest told me something to this effect
or maybe he said,
Mystics don't see things in normal light
they can seem too much within
they are always restless for more of God
i think i get what he was saying
the Holy Thursday service was simply amazing
the presence of the Holy Spirit palpable
grace was imparted through the readings, the music, the homily,
the washing of the feet is always a bit odd and beautiful
grace flooded the room through the Communion of the Eucharist
falling like rain on hard, weary, receptive, lonely, hopeful, confused,
hearts
today is Good Friday
I always think of the Annunciation on Good Friday
Gabriel coming to a poor girl in the middle of nowhere
God becomes man
Simeon told her what was coming for her heart
for His side..
that day is here..

being known

i don't pretend to understand

understanding is a tricky thing
one day things are clear
the sky is blue
time lumbers along
skies turn dark
murky
what we once held to with confidence,
now seems the cause of our trouble
every time i read the prayers of a Saint,
like Padre Pio,
i know even more that i do not know very much,
the love he had for the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
was intense, relentless, emotional, dark, light,
a constant joy and struggle
knowing wasn't that important to him,
being known by Jesus meant everything..
