into the field of fire (correction)

the wind picked up just as she dropped the match
the dry brown field before them burst into flame!
as if ignited by gasoline
the wind whipped the flames into a frenzy,
she panicked and tried to stomp it out,
her 9 year old son just stood there watching..
on the other side of the 5 acre field were the homes of a small neighborhood of black folk,
some of whom worked for her father,
he was the only white man in town to allow black men to drive his trucks
she screamed, "GO GET MAW MAW! HURRY!!!"
he ran to the house to get Hazel,
he burst through the screen door,
"Maw Maw, the field is on fire!"
she picked up the rotary dial maroon phone,
"Travis, can y'all bring the fire truck,

our field is ablaze and caught in the wind?"
she hung up and told me to stay in the house,
she took off her apron and threw it in the sink,
i watched her out the kitchen window,
she had a rake in her left hand,
running like an old person runs,
straight into the field of fire..
