Choose

We all get the chance to be nothing.---Bruce Cockburn

 

We are called by love to be something. Does this mean anything to us? Jesus came to show us what this looks like. He became nothing so that we could become God's something, His children. But just like any child, running away is always a reality. We like to run sometimes. We like thinking we are truly in control of everything, and that we are fine on our own. Jesus said, "Apart from Me you can do nothing." As Cockburn sings, "we all get the chance to be nothing." Everything is up to our response to grace. Grace falls like a steady rain on the just and unjust, thank God! We can choose today to go it alone, and in this we will eventually find emptiness, or we can choose to believe His love is true, and by grace, inch by inch, through great trial, and at times great joy, become something, something full of love and humility.
