Talking to Wolves

True mysticism is active and practical, not passive and theoretical.--Vincent Van Gogh

St. Francis would agree with Vincent. He was often considered a mystic because of the stigmata he received on the mountain. And he was known to spend hours alone with the Blessed Sacrament in prayer and adoration. He had many experiences that we would consider mystical. He talked to a wolf once and the wolf became a protector of the very town it had once terrorized. He preached to birds. But the most important thing that Francis did was help the poor and revive the faithful. His mysticism was Jesus Christ' love for everyone. His life was about rebuilding the Church and bringing it back to the heart of Jesus, and to the dedication of Mary the mother of God. He went from the riches of the world to wealth of the Kingdom. He was a true mystic, very much like Mother Teresa.
